An Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is software used by roughly 99% of Fortune 500 companies to collect, sort, and rank job applications. Think of it as a digital gatekeeper. When you upload your PDF or Word document, the ATS strips away the formatting and reads the raw text to see if your skills match the job description.

If your resume contains complex designs, tables, or missing keywords, the ATS cannot read it. Consequently, you get automatically rejected before a human being ever sees your application.

The Golden Rules of an ATS-Friendly Resume

• Stick to standard fonts: Use Times New Roman, Arial, Helvetica, or Calibri.
• Avoid columns and tables: Multi-column layouts scramble the reading order of the ATS bot. Keep it single-column.
• Use standard headers: Don't get creative. Use "Work Experience", "Education", and "Skills" so the bot knows where it is.
• Save as PDF: Unless specified otherwise, standard, text-based PDFs are the safest option.
